How ERV & HRV Systems Work
ERV and HRV systems work by pulling in a current of outdoor air through a vent and then using a cross-current of the air from inside the home to either pre-heat the air (in cold weather) or pre-cool it (in hot weather). The incoming fresh air is already close to the desired temperature for the home, and the stale indoor air gets exhausted outdoors. The HRV/ERV has "recovered" the energy already used to heat and cool the air indoors and used it for the incoming air. ERV systems also alter the humidity of the incoming air, while HRVs are more effective in colder weather.
